Kita or Childminder in Harburg: How to Find the Right Childcare

📋 Summary:

Neither childcare option is inherently better. What matters most is what suits your child and your family's daily life. Pay close attention to age, group size, reliability, costs, and potential transitions.

Briefly explained: In childminding (Kindertagespflege), a childminder (Tagesmutter or Tagesvater), officially called a childcare provider (Tagespflegeperson), looks after a maximum of five children at a time. This happens in their own home or in rented premises. The person needs basic qualifications and a childcare permit from the youth welfare office (Jugendamt). In a Kita, on the other hand, a team of state-recognized educators (Erzieherinnen und Erziehern) works with larger groups in specially equipped rooms.

If you live in Harburg, Heimfeld, Eißendorf, Wilstorf, or Neuland and are looking for a childcare place, you will sooner or later face this question. Often, it comes at a time when there's already a lot going on: parental leave, returning to work, little sleep. This guide therefore doesn't cover every conceivable aspect. It follows the questions that parents actually ask in conversation. At the end, you'll find a table and some questions to help you find your own answer.

What age is suitable for which option?

Your child's age is usually the first point families consider. Especially for children under three, many parents consciously choose childminding. A baby or toddler there has a single, consistent caregiver, few other children, and a daily routine that feels like an extended home. For some children, this small setting is just right for taking their first steps away from their parents.

A Kita generally covers a wider age range, from crèche (Krippe) to elementary school preparation (Elementarbereich). The Stadtküken Kita Glockenturm, for example, plans to offer around 170 places for children aged 0 to 6 from February 2027. Children who start in the crèche there can therefore stay in the same facility until they start school.

Therefore, don't just think about the beginning, but also about the time after. What suits your one-year-old today may not suit your four-year-old.

How many children are in the group, and how many adults?

The differences here are obvious, but can easily be misinterpreted. In childminding, there are a maximum of five children together. They all have the same adult caregiver. This creates closeness and clarity: your child knows every face, and the childminder knows every peculiarity.

In a Kita, groups are larger. Crèche groups usually comprise 10 to 12 children, while in kindergarten age, there are significantly more. However, several qualified staff members look after the group simultaneously. For children under three, the staff-to-child ratio is about one qualified staff member for three children. A larger group therefore doesn't automatically mean less attention. It's just distributed among several adults.

To allow for a realistic comparison: The Stadtküken Kita Glockenturm plans for six crèche groups with a maximum of 15 children. In addition, there will be five elementary groups with about 20 to 25 children, each as fixed groups. Ask each facility how many qualified staff members actually work in your child's group at the same time.

💡 Tip:

Observe your child in situations with many other children, such as at the playground or during a playdate. Does your child tend to seek quiet on the sidelines, or do they become lively in such situations? This is not a judgment of your child. It's a useful hint as to which setting might make their start easier.

How reliable is the childcare in everyday life?

This question is often underestimated during the initial meeting. In everyday life, it can then be the deciding factor.

Childcare Hours

Childminders often coordinate hours individually with families and can sometimes adjust them at short notice. This can be a great help if you work shifts or varying hours. Kitas have fixed opening hours, often from 7 AM to 5 PM, and close temporarily during holidays. However, you can plan long-term. The Kita Glockenturm will be open Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:00, with core hours from 9 AM to 2 PM.

If someone is absent

With a childminder, childcare depends on a single person. If they get sick, a substitute must be arranged. If this isn't possible, you'll have to look after your child yourself during this time or find another solution. In a Kita, other staff members step in if someone is absent. A day with a fever for an educator therefore usually doesn't mean an unplanned day off for you.

Honestly ask yourself: How much flexibility do you have at work? Are there grandparents or friends nearby who can step in? The less buffer you have, the more the reliability of a team speaks for a Kita.

What does childcare cost in Harburg?

In Hamburg, the financing of a Kita place is done via the Kita-Gutschein (childcare voucher). If you live in Harburg, the Harburg District Office (Bezirksamt Harburg) is responsible for this. We explain in detail how to apply for the voucher and what you need to consider in the article on the Kita-Gutschein in Harburg. The Stadtküken Kitas accept the Kita-Gutschein.

For childminding, it's best to clarify directly with the Harburg District Office how the costs are regulated in your situation. This way, you compare reliable information and not hearsay figures. Also, ask each provider what services are included in the daily routine. Only then can you truly compare the offers side by side.

How often will your child have to transition?

A point that many only consider late: every transition means a new settling-in period for your child. They get to know new people, new rooms, and new routines. If you start with a childminder, plan early when and where they should go next. Talk to the childminder about how you can manage the transition together.

If your child starts in a facility that combines crèche and elementary school preparation under one roof, much remains familiar. This applies to buildings, routines, and often friendships. You can read how a gentle settling-in period succeeds, no matter when it occurs, in our guide to settling in at Kita.

⚠️ Warning:

Childcare places are in high demand in many regions, both in Kitas and in childminding. Don't wait until you've made a final decision to start your search. Inform yourself about both options in parallel so that you actually have a choice in the end.

Five questions to help you decide

Take a quiet evening and answer these questions, preferably together with your partner:

  1. How does our child react to hustle and bustle? Do they thrive among many children, or do they first need a small, quiet circle?
  2. Who should our child trust? Is a single, very close caregiver more important to us, or does a team that shares responsibility reassure us?
  3. How fixed are our working hours? Can we manage with fixed opening hours, or do we need flexibility at the beginning or end of the day?
  4. Who steps in if childcare falls through? Do we have a network that can help at short notice?
  5. How many transitions do we want to put our child through? Should they ideally stay in one place until school?

Mark the two or three questions that are most important to you. Usually, a clear direction will emerge. After that, it's worth getting to know local providers and observing closely where your child spontaneously feels comfortable. You can find an overview of the childcare landscape in the district in the article on Kita search in Harburg.

Conclusion: Your priorities decide, not a blanket judgment

Childminding offers a small setting, a consistent caregiver, and often flexible hours. A Kita offers a team, reliable substitutes, more playmates, and often the option to stay in one place until school entry. Which strengths weigh more heavily for you depends on your child and your family's daily life.
